A Simple & Casual Wedding at The Powerhouse

From the couple…

This was a destination wedding. We met at FLC in 2014 and decided to return to Durango.

THE VENUE

We chose The Powerhouse for its beautiful surroundings, proximity to downtown, and outdoor space. The science museum was the cherry on top!

FIRST LOOK

It was a sweet, informal moment that allowed us to shake some of the nerves and formality off before the ceremony itself.

THE CEREMONY

We held an outdoor ceremony at The Powerhouse.  Our ceremony was secular and included personal quotes and vows. We had our mothers speak during the ceremony – this is a highlight that we share. Another important highlight for us was sharing our vows – we took some time during a camping trip earlier in the year to work on our vows separately, and those became what we eventually shared. It was special to share our vows with that memory in the background too — we value travel and adventure, so this was a perfect touch.

After the ceremony, our guests enjoyed a happy hour, a catered dinner from Zia Taqueria, and a fun night of dancing and laughing. Our main goal was to have a wedding in which everyone could enjoy themselves and we could spend time with them. We spent much of the time outdoors, as the weather in September was perfect for our day. We moved inside for cake and dancing after it got dark.

THE RECEPTION

Having the dance party in the science museum at the Powerhouse was great. Pretty special to celebrate under the skeleton of a dinosaur! Some attendees also really enjoyed the exhibits and photo ops inside a dinosaur egg.

LOOKING BACK

We wish we had spent more time enjoying Durango. Having a bit more time to enjoy where we first met would’ve made the week even more special. We plan on visiting again soon.

ADVICE

Set a budget! If you can DIY some items or decor; it makes the day even more special knowing that you contributed to it. Also, set a line item in the budget for miscellaneous items.
